Clean Beauty For Every Occasion - Date Night Edition

Below, you can find each product’s safety scores according to the Environmental Working Group and the Think Dirty app, as well as links & downloads to each product’s safety report from EWG. I also triple check them with the Switch Natural app, as even some cosmetics that are EWG Verified contain potentially harmful ingredients…

I use this multi-step approach to ensure that the clean beauty products I use and recommend are actually clean. Why?
There are many makeup brands that claim to be “clean” or “non toxic,” but they still use toxic ingredients like fragrance, peg compounds, siloxanes, or other potentially toxic ingredients.

*I think this EWG score is misleading. The ingredients in question by EWG are Benzyl Alcohol, Lecithin, and Aloe Vera Gel (inside the leaf, not the skin). I am not concerned with these ingredients, especially since I am not putting the product on my eyes, lips, or inhaling a powder.  Nevertheless, here is the EWG report. I used EWG’s Build Your Own Report feature.

Ingredients:

Zinc Oxide 14% (sunscreen, active ingredient) *Aloe Barbadensis Leaf (Aloe Vera Gel) Juice, Aqua (Deionized Water), Astaxanthin, Benzyl Alcohol, Betula Alba (Birch) Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Extract, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Citric Acid, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Extract, Decyl Glucoside, Dehydroacetic Acid, Dodecane, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil, Hyaluronic Acid, Lecithin, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Butter, Prunus Domestica (Plum) Fruit Extract, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract, Rubus Chamaemorus (Cloudberry) Oil, Sodium Polyacrylate, Stearic Acid, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Tridecyl Salicylate, Propanediol.

Why I Love It

Not only do I love using this as a makeup primer, but it’s also perfect for days when I don’t want to wear much makeup. It has SPF 30 and it evens out the skin tone on its own so it’s perfect for really any occasion. If you don’t like to wear a lot of makeup but want to even things out, this is perfect for you. It is a lightweight formula, like a serum.

Ingredients:

Active Ingredients: 15% Zinc-Oxide (non-nano)
Inactive Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Purified Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, C13-15 Alkane, Glycerin, Lauroyl Lysine, Polyglyceryl-2 Oleate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Tocopherol, Kappaphycus Alvarezii Extract, Caesalpinia Spinosa Fruit Extract, Melanin, Bisabolol, Hyaluronic Acid, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Phospholipids, Polyglyceryl-2 Stearate, Sodium Chloride, Propylene Carbonate, Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate, Titanium Dioxide (C.I.77891), Iron Oxides (C.I.77492, C.I. 77491, C.I.77499)

Why I Love It

I am kind of blown away by this foundation. To me, it is a clean dupe for the Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream. However, at $55, it is definitely not as affordable, though a little goes a long way. If you have normal to dry skin, this is a good investment for a daily foundation.

Tips

It will look quite dewy when you apply it. I get oily as the day goes on, so I definitely need powder with this one. For this date night, I used the powder below.

My Shade: Eyebright

Ingredients:

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax), *Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Tocopheryl (Vitamin E) Acetate, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Silica, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Caffeine, Resveratrol, PunicaGranatum (Pomegranate) Extract, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Lauryl Laurate Tocopheryl (Vitamin E) Acetate, may contain: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Mica (CI 77019), Yellow Iron Oxide (CI 77492), Lecithin, Red Iron Oxide (CI 77491), Black Iron Oxide (CI 77499) *Certified Organic Ingredients

Why I Love It

This is an amazing corrector to use under concealer to brighten the under-eyes. It has a yellow tint that awakens and brightens otherwise tired-looking eyes. For my skin, I find this works just as well if not better than the Tarte Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector in Light-Medium, but I find the Fitglow Correct+ to adhere to the skin better. They carry this corrector in 4 additional shades. If you have very sensitive eyes like me, be aware that this slightly irritated my eyes for an hour or so after applying.

Tips

A little bit goes a very long way. Using the Real Techniques Expert Concealer Brush (commissions earned), I dab a tiny amount around the inner corners of my eye, then blend outward.

My Shade: C2

EWG Score*

*I think this EWG score is misleading. I confirmed personally with Fitglow that the Chromium Oxide Greens used in the product do not contain the chromate ion (and that they follow the tighter cosmetics regulations required in the EU). Nevertheless, here is the EWG report. I used EWG’s Build Your Own Report feature.

Ingredients:

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil *, Cera Alba (Beeswax)* , Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil*, Lauryl Laurate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Phytoelastin PF (Plant Elastin), Water, Phospholipids & Phytonadione (Vitamin K Liposome ) , Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Caffeine, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (Green Tea Extract ) *, Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract (Licorice Root) * May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Yellow Iron Oxide, Red Iron Oxide, Black Iron Oxide, Ultramarine Violet, Chromium Oxide Green, Manganese Violet. *Certified Organic Ingredients

Why I Love It

I’m so impressed by this concealer. I need full coverage on most days and this is actually full coverage (unlike many other concealers that claim to be “full coverage” but are not). My shade (C2) looks beautiful and glowy with a peach undertone, which is perfect for my under eyes.

Tips

I use water-based moisturizers underneath this (oils can cause makeup to break up). To minimize creasing and set it without looking cakey, I apply the (M)anasi 7 Silk Finish Powder with one of my Jenny Patinkin On Pointe Puffs (a folded-up powder puff can also work) and use a soft brush to brush off the excess.

My shade: Translucent

Ingredients:

Silica***, Silk Powder*** ***Produced from natural/wild harvested raw materials

Why I Love It

I had been searching everywhere for a clean powder to set my under-eyes that prevents creasing and does not accentuate texture, and this is a winner!

Tips

To minimize creasing and set it without looking cakey, I apply the powder to my undereye with the Jenny Patinkin On Pointe Puffs (a folded-up powder puff can work as well) and use a soft brush to brush off the excess.

*EWG listing is outdated for this product. I used EWG’s Build Your Own Report feature.
**Think Dirty’s listing does not contain sunflower seed oil & includes additional outdated ingredients, but maintains a low score even with those.

Ingredients:

Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Ricinus communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Lanolin USP, Silica (Silicon Dioxide), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Carmine (CI 75470), Carnauba Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Tocopherol (Non-GMO Soy Derived)

Why I Love It

I used this luxurious cream pigment on my cheeks and a little on my eyes in the photo. It is very pigmented and a little goes a long way. I also noticed that it didn’t fade at all throughout the night, which I cannot usually say about clean multi-use colors. You can use this anywhere on your face.

Tips

I either dab it on the area I want and blend it out with my fingers, apply it to a dense-bristled brush, or use the round edge of a dry or damp makeup sponge.

My shade: Avignon (I have light skin with cool pink undertone)

*I used EWG’s Build Your Own Report feature.

Mica, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Zinc Stearate, Silica, Bambusa Arundinacea (Bamboo) Stem Extract, Lyceum Barbum (Goji) Fruit Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil. Ingredients:

Shades: Sultana & Sundance

Mica, Zinc Stearate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch*, Lycium Chinese (Goji) Berry*, Bambusa Arundinaceae (Bamboo) Powder, Silica, Tocopherol, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil*, Caprylic Capric Triglyceride. May contain: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499). *Certified organic ingredient

Why I Love It

This reminds me of the CoverGirl Clean Fresh Pressed Powder I used to use (I stopped using it when they snuck phenoxyethanol in it, which is only indicated on the packaging and not online). It is only a few dollars more and it provides excellent buildable coverage. It evens my skin tone while providing brightness to my complexion. It will last all day, but, as with most products, it breaks up in my t-zone a bit after a few hours. During my wear test, I needed to blot at the 6-hour mark. I think this is a fabulous clean powder that is just as effective as your conventional drugstore powders.

Tips

The directions say to use a puff or a kabuki brush. I usually use my EcoTools Powder Brush (commissions earned).

*Think Dirty’s listing does not include Candelilla Wax or Tocopheryl Acetate.

Ingredients:

Isoamyl Laurate, Isoamyl Cocoate, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Helianthus Annuus Cera, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Tocopherol Oryza Sativa Cera (Rice Bran) Wax, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Emblica Officinalis Fruit Extract, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Rhus Verniciflua Peel Cera (Berry Wax), Ricinus Communis (Castor Seed) Oil, Hydrogenated Olive Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil Unsaponifiables, Tocopheryl Acetate, Silica, Coleus Forskohlii. May Contain: CI 77891, CI 77492, CI 77491, CI 77499 (and) Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate (and) Cystine (and) Lauroyl Arginine

Why I Love It

This has replaced my Anastasia Brow Wiz, as the ingredients in this Plume brow pencil are much cleaner! It is very delicate and glides on smoothly, so you do not have to use much pressure at all. I find it to be soft and nicely pigmented. The color match for me (shade: “chestnut decadence”) is good and comparable to the Anastasia “medium brown” shade. It stayed on all day. The barrel is wider than the Anastasia pencil, but I really love how lightweight and precise it is. It is a few dollars more than other brow pencils, but it comes with a refill. It comes in 6 shades. If you buy it on Amazon, please be aware that different shades may be in multiple listings.

Ingredients:

Mica (CI 77019), Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carmine (CI 75470), Silica (Silicon Dioxide), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Non-GMO Soy Derived)

Why I Love It

Another clean, luxurious product from Rituel de Fille. This is a highly pigmented “eye soot.” They have a lot of cool colors that I want to try. It’s a good thing they have samples! I also love the shades Golden Age, Exuviae, Sigil, and Serpent de Mer.

I have found this eyeshadow to be long-wearing. The iridescent, changing nature of each color and the originality of shades make this a stand-out product that I think is worth the money if you can swing it. A great way to try different shades is to order their samples!

Tips

I tapped this in the crease of my upper eyelid, in the middle of my eyelid, and a little bit above the crease. You can increase the intensity of the shade by simply applying additional layers of product. You can use a brush or your finger.

Ingredients:

Mica, Silica, Oryza Sativa (Rice Starch), *Rubus Chamaemorus (Cloudberry) Seed Oil, Bambusa Vulgaris (Bamboo) Extract, Lauroyl Lysine, Zinc Stearate, Squalane (Vegetable Derived), Argan Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Propanediol. May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Yellow Iron Oxide, Red Iron Oxide, Black Iron Oxide.
*Certified Organic Ingredients

Why I Love It

As you can tell, I am a big fan of Fitglow Beauty because of their transparency and quality of products. These multi-use colors are quite pigmented, so I know when I make a purchase, the product will last a long time. This is a yummy chocolate brown shade.

Tips

I often use this shade to create dimension by placing this color in the outer corner of my eye crease and a little above. In the video I applied this using my EcoTools angled crease brush from the EcoTools Daily Defined Eye Makeup Brush Kit (commissions earned).

(commissions earned)

My shade: 02 French Chocolate (Matte Brown)

Ingredients:

Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Synthetic Wax, Isododecane, Ci 77491/Iron Oxides, Ci 77499/Iron Oxides, Ci 77492/Iron Oxides, Polybutene, Mica, Ethylene/Propylene Copolymer, Copernicia Cerifera Cera/Carnauba Wax/Cire De Carnauba, Silica Silylate, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate.

Why I Love It

I use this to tightline my upper lash line, as it is soft and does not smudge. It also lasts an entire day. I am picky, as most liners irritate my eyes, but this one does not. It’s much cleaner than most eyeliners and it does not contain Black 2 which is in SO many eyeliners. I am impressed because Lancôme isn’t even a so-called “clean brand.”

Tips

Since I just use it to tight line (push & squiggle it into my lash line), I don’t worry about wasting product by sharpening it all the time.

Ingredients:

Water, Algae Extract, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Copernicia Cerifera Cera, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Oleic Acid, Raphanus Sativus (Radish) Root Extract

Why I Love It

I have been using this for many years as an eyelash primer to keep my mascara from smudging throughout the day. It also adds some volume and length to my lashes that I don’t get with mascara alone. It’s clean and reliable. One tube lasts me about a year.

Tips

I apply this to my lashes after my setting powder. I gently blot off the excess with my fingertips and let it dry while I apply the rest of my makeup. I apply my mascara as a last step.

Ingredients:

Aqua, Iron Oxide (CI 77499), *Euphorbia Cerifera (Candellila) Wax, *Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba Wax), *Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Wax, Vegetable Collagen, *Myrica Pubescens Fruit Wax, Stearic Acid (Cocoa Source), *Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail Plant) Extract, *Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Propanediol / Pentylene Glycol / Phenethyl Alcohol (Non GMO Sugar Source), Hydrolyzed (Lupine) Plant Protein.
*CERTIFIED ORGANIC INGREDIENTS

Why I Love It

This is not just mascara, it is a dual-brush, multi-tasking eyelash serum + mascara that makes your lashes longer & healthier the more you use it. It uses plant extracts and superfoods to boost the health of your lashes.

Tips

Starting from the root of the lashes, wiggle the brush and sweep upward. Re-apply for a more dramatic look.

Why I Love It

This brush is fabulous for winged liner. It is very precise and easy to handle.

Tips

I use this to apply dark brown eyeshadow (in this photo, I used the darkest shade of the previous Well People Violet Power Palette – this palette now contains Red 40 Lake which is petroleum-derived so I don’t recommend buying) as a wing on my hooded eyes to create a softer look than with eyeliner (I extend the wing out onto the hood as if the hood is not there). I find that this slightly blended wing of eyeshadow looks more natural than liquid eyeliner on the hood of my eye. However, I still apply eyeliner along my top lash line to give it a seamless look.

Ingredients:

Water (Aqua/Eau), Propanediol,Ectoin, Sea Water, Caesalpinia Spinosa Fruit Extract, Kappaphycus Alvarezii Extract, Glycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Citric Acid

Why I Love It

Honest Beauty formulated this setting spray with active ingredients that include a “sugar shielding blend that acts as a weightless second skin,” while extremolyte (a stress-protection molecule) helps to defend against blue environmental pollutants.

Tips

When I am done with my makeup, I hold this about half an arm’s length away and spritz it all over my face with my eyes closed. Then, I fan my face for a few seconds to help it dry.
