There is scientific evidence that some ingredients in cosmetics are hazardous to our health. Indeed, the European Union has banned or restricted the use of many of these ingredients in cosmetic formulations. Yet, in the US, the cosmetics regulations are more lax and we are often kept in the dark about these potentially harmful ingredients in our makeup & skincare.
Some regulating and beauty industry authorities in the US say that you should not worry about these ingredients, as they are present in such low amounts, they could not possibly be harmful. These authorities make these broad recommendations based on periodic reviews of products at random. However, who is testing these products regularly to say for certain?
If it is possible to purchase products that work just as well (it is possible!), without these ingredients (or at least, as few of them as possible), why not make the switch?
Yes, it is time-consuming to research each and every product you are considering buying. Additionally, many organic and non-toxic makeup brands charge much more than the brands that are available in drugstores.
These are the barriers I have faced to accessing clean beauty as well. I have relied heavily on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database in the past. They are a great resource, especially for people who are short on time and cannot stop to scrutinize every label, however, they also have their shortcomings.
That’s where I come in.
I have a passion for researching ingredients the clean beauty industry says are “bad,” finding out why, trying out less potentially harmful alternatives, and reporting my findings to you.
I am not an expert, but I try to be an informed consumer. I enjoy using what I’ve learned to help others navigate the cosmetics industry and access healthier choices. I research and review products at every price point so you can decide which products are best for you.
None of us are perfect, and we cannot always avoid these chemicals 100% of the time. My approach is to try my best to limit the amount of these ingredients I put on my skin.
Pick and choose: If you have one product you can’t live without that contains Phenoxyethanol, try to limit the other items you purchase that contain Phenoxyethanol.
You can gradually replace products in your regimen with cleaner products as you discover new, less toxic products! 🙂
How do you feel about the cosmetics industry? Are you considering making the switch to clean beauty? I welcome your thoughts and questions!
