Two months ago, we moved from the Caribbean (where I had a completely different set of curly hair problems, ha!) to the American Southwest. Living in a desert climate, with its low dew point, has given me a whole new set of hair challenges I've never had to deal with before! When we first moved here, my curls were dry and limp. After doing some research, I ended up switching to a more hydrating (but not TOO hydrating, as I have fine hair) hair routine with minimal glycerin (Fun fact: I read that glycerin can coat the hair and prevent moisture from coming through to your hair strands - interesting!).
Since, we've been here in the desert for a couple of months now, I've been testing out the following haircare routine, and I am happy to report that it has really saved my curls and brought life to them again!
If you want to skip straight to all products mentioned below in my non-toxic curly hair routine for the desert, click here.
My routine is as follows:
Wash with Rahua Voluminous Shampoo.
Condition with Rahua Voluminous Conditioner.
Towel dry a little bit with a hair towel.
Spritz hair with Rosewater (for a little extra hydration) until soaking wet.
Spray the Rahua Detangler throughout my hair so I can comb through it. Set my part.
Apply 1 pump of Rahua Hair Oil (warmed in my hands) to the lower 3rd of my hair.
Rake 2 pumps of Rahua Freestyle Texturizer throughout my hair (this product gives me additional volume).
Make sure the hair is still very wet
Rake about a quarter-size amount (depending on hair length) of Rahua Cream Wax throughout my hair.
Scrunch well to set curl pattern.
As my hair air dries, I watch out to see if I have any frizzies developing, in which case, I apply more Cream Wax and spray with water.
Before I lived in the desert, I used the same Rahua Voluminous Shampoo with Evolvh’s curl conditioner (alternated with their Deep Conditioner every couple of weeks). For styling, I used a generous amount of their WonderBalm mixed with the Curl Cream after washing. They have fantastic products as well.
