My Story 📖
There seem to be so many different definitions of “clean beauty” depending on which of the hundreds of different “clean beauty brands” or retailers I look at. I became frustrated by these conflicting messages about which makeup and skincare is actually clean. Does Sephora know what’s clean? Or is it Ulta or the newest “clean beauty brand” or… someone else?…
I wanted a simple way to know which cosmetics are safe so that I can feel secure knowing I am not slathering potentially harmful substances on myself multiple times a day. 😩 I was confused about who to listen to: “Clean beauty brands,” the “Clean At Sephora,” or “Conscious Beauty at Ulta” labels? Should I trust Detox Market and Credo Beauty definitions of clean? It was hard to know who to trust. I also wasn’t completely sure what the terms “non-toxic,” “low tox,” or “natural” meant.
After months of researching ingredients, it became clear to me that (in my opinion) most of those labels and definitions don’t mean much and I was trying to decipher facts from marketing terms. So, I decided to start my own resource for discerning shoppers like me who want the facts about cosmetics ingredients, and an array of product options!
To avoid greenwashing/cleanwashing, I examine the INGREDIENTS of each product before adding it to my shop. I double-check the safety of each product by scanning the ingredients with the Switch Natural app, as even some cosmetics that are EWG Verified contain potentially harmful ingredients. All products listed have passed the Switch Natural scanner unless indicated. (It is a great resource, as it includes links to research that tells you why a certain ingredient is potentially harmful.) I have found that the BEST way to determine whether a product is clean is to look at the ingredients (and to re-check from time to time as brands occasionally change their formulas).
If you are curious, I also include each product’s safety scores according to the Environmental Working Group and the Think Dirty app, when available. You will find links/downloads to each product’s safety report according to EWG, if available. I also include Think Dirty’s score, but their reports can only be accessed through their app.
Due to affiliate program rules, I am not able to list prices, but you can filter by price range. In general:
“$ Budget” = items that are often listed for under $20
“$$ Mid-range” and “$$$ Premium” are there to give you an idea of where the product’s typical price falls within the wide spectrum of makeup prices relative to other products on the market of the same type.
Remember to check the ingredients on the product packaging when you receive it! Brands occasionally change their ingredients, AND sometimes the ingredients on the product label are different from what is listed online! This is where the Switch Natural app comes in handy 😊
